The Seattle Department of Transportation (DoT) in the US will add 57 traffic cameras in the city this year to enhance real-time information.

The closed-circuit television cameras will almost double the number of existing cameras in the city and are expected to begin operations early next year.

Seattle DoT director Grace Crunican said that with more information available to the city’s Traffic Management Center, roadway conditions can be improved by remotely adjusting signal timing or bridge operations.

“Crews are installing traffic cameras in Ballard, City Centre, SODO and West Seattle this year, which will significantly address congestion when they come on-line,” Crunican said.

The initiative is part of the city’s intelligent transportation system upgrade for this year and early 2010, which includes adding dynamic message signs.
