French toll road operator ASF (Autoroutes du Sud de la France) and Orange Business Services have partnered to develop a real-time traffic information system for road operators.

The two companies are launching a pilot project to disseminate real time traffic information on nearly 1,200km of road network including motorways, national and departmental roads as well as suburban expressways in France.

ASF is providing real-time data collection devices and services for the system including sensors, traffic count stations, cameras and patrols carried out on its network.

Orange will use GSM signal data on its mobile network to statistically estimate the speed movement of motorists using their mobile on all roads.

The flow of traffic information real-time product includes four types of data including instantaneous velocity at a given road network, traffic, travel time and congestion indicating the crossing time.

The traffic information will be updated every six minutes, according to the companies.
