British Columbia in Canada is to install intersection safety camera systems from Redflex Traffic Systems to reduce the number of crashes on roads.

Under a contract Redflex will supply, install and maintain 140 intersection safety camera systems and also provide the Image and Infringement Processing System (IIPS).

The technology will help reduce the frequency of crashes caused due to running red lights in various communities across the province.

The contract, for an initial term of six years with two additional two-year extension options, has been awarded by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

It is part of an integral road safety programme operated by the police in BC in partnership with ICBC.

Prior to the contract, Redflex installed and operated six intersection safety systems that were closely evaluated by ICBC.
