The Indian Government has approved a proposal for the six-laning of national highways to address the increased traffic volume in the country.

The proposal includes the widening of 6,500km of road, including the entire Golden Quadrilateral highway network and 800km of other high-density traffic corridors.

The six-laning projects are part of the National Highways Development Project and will be implemented under the private-public partnership mode.

Work on the project is scheduled to be complete in 2012.
