A US$11.25bn multi-year highway improvement programme to maintain the current road system from 2010 to 2015 has been unveiled by Illinois Department of Transportation.

Out of the total amount it is expected that $7.499bn and $3.047bn will be funded by the federal and state governments, respectively.

The amount $8.442bn will be funded for state highway improvements and $2.808bn for local roads.
The proposed project focuses on the protecting and maintaining existing highway systems, as well as upgrading the facilities for congestion mitigation and safety.

About $4.377bn will be invested for system maintenance projects, $2.453bn for bridge maintenance projects, $1.514 for congestion mitigation projects and $99m for system expansion projects.

The programme also includes renovation of 802 bridges, development of interstate highways and local roads and the funding of a crossing safety programme.
