Construction work has begun on a new €106m road bridge over the Zambezi River in Mozambique.

The 1,350m-long bridge, the second over the Zambezi River, will link Benga in the Moatize district to Tete City.

Work will be carried out by a consortium of Portuguese firms Mota Engil and Soares da Costa, which each hold a 40% stake, and Mozambican firm Infra Engineering under a 30-year concession agreement.

The project also includes the repair and maintainence of several transport links in the region, including the Samora Machel Bridge.

Construction is expected to finish by 2012.
