UK-based Navtech Radar will supply its real-time radar incident detection solution for the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 highway in Surrey.

The 1.8km (1.1 miles) twin-bored tunnel, expected to open in mid-2011, is part of the new 6.5km road at Hindhead in Surrey, which will finish the dual two-lane highway link between London and Portsmouth.

Navtech will supply six ClearWay TS350-X radar per tunnel bore for the use of incident detection, including slow-moving, stopped or reversing vehicles, pedestrians and debris.

Individual radar have long detection ranges, resulting in fewer sensors and lower installation costs, and are unaffected by fog, bright sunlight or general dust and grime, according to the company.

The solution will report the location of an alarm to the control room operator and bring up the most relevant CCTV camera image automatically if required, allowing the appropriate action to be taken.
