The Gateway Western Australia project has been completed and will provide a safer and fully upgraded transport network around Perth Airport, as well as the Kewdale and Forrestfield industrial areas.

Claimed to be the largest road project so far in Perth, it has been jointly funded by the federal government and the Western Australian government.

The federal government has invested $676m on the project, while $310m has been invested by the Western Australian government.

"With more than 1,000 construction workers employed at the project’s peak, it has been completed nearly a year before its scheduled date and at a lower cost than the estimated budget."

The scope of the Gateway WA project included the construction and modernisation of five main interchanges.

It also involved six-laning of the Tonkin Highway that runs between Great Eastern Highway and Roe Highway, as well as upgrading Leach Highway, which stretches from Tonkin Highway to Orrong Road, to expressway standard.

The project also featured road and bridge improvements, about 7km of noise or screen walls, a landscaping programme, nearly 21km of shared path and local connections for pedestrians and cyclists, and the use of intelligent transport system (ITS) technology.

With an aim to increase the economic capacity of Western Australia, the Gateway WA project is expected to help reduce traffic congestion, reduce road delays and enhance safety for road users of the region.

The project has been executed by a joint venture comprising Georgiou, GHD, CPB Contractors, AECOM and BG&E, along with Main Roads Western Australia.
