Linköping has become the first Swedish city to implement a new solution that helps drivers with disabilities to locate designated parking spaces with ease.

Typically, parking spaces meant for this group of drivers carry a symbol of the international wheelchair.

Now, the 23 designated parking bays spread across the city are installed with smart in-ground SENSIT sensors that send parking bay occupancy information in real-time to the LinPark smartphone application, which is designed to help motorists park their vehicles without requiring them to line up at parking ticket machines.

"It allows optimal usage of the limited capacity and optionally can monitor remotely with an electronic parking licenses (EPL) if the designated parking bay is occupied by a permit holder."

Swarco Sweden has combined Nedap’s SENSIT sensors to bolster the digital parking services of the app, reported Traffictechnology.com.

Swarco Sweden sales and product manager Thony Rysjö was quoted by the website as saying: "This innovative parking service for motorists with disabilities is a benchmark for all Municipalities in Sweden.

"It allows optimal usage of the limited capacity and optionally can monitor remotely with an electronic parking licenses (EPL) if the designated parking bay is occupied by a permit holder.

"The Nedap patented EPL solution makes the total SENSIT platform unique in the parking industry."

By monitoring the data on designated parking spaces, the city’s authorities will be able to effectively reduce parking problems.
