The US state of Washington has allotted funds for the construction of 21 additional highway projects across the state.

The funds, worth about $112m, will be used to repair ageing highways, including repaving part of I-5 near Bellingham and I-90 near Spokane, and the eastern Washington area.

The projects include upgrading and replacing high-tech traffic controllers, safety improvements to prevent cross-over collisions on SR 17 and additional lanes on I-90 to ease congestion.

The state plans to award the contracts this year and will begin construction work soon.

The funds have been jointly allocated for road and ferry projects in the state.
