Canada-based Dufferin Construction has secured an $83m contract from the state government of Ontario to improve and widen Highway 427.

Under the deal, the company will widen a 7km-stretch of Highway 427 between Campus Road-Fasken Drive and Steeles Avenue.

The project will not only improve traffic flow and safety in the Greater Toronto Area, but will also create 830 construction jobs.

The project is part of government’s plan to invest $2.5bn towards road and bridge construction projects this year, which will create approximately 25,000 jobs, build modern infrastructure and create a dynamic business climate.

"Our government is committed to improving infrastructure across the province."

The scope of work in the project include repairs and repaving works, building one high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction, repairing eight bridges and installing new high-mast lighting and median barriers.

Ontario minister of transportation Steven Del Duca said: "Our government is committed to improving infrastructure across the province.

"This project will create jobs, strengthen the economy and help keep goods and people moving for years to come."

Construction works on the project is expected to be complete by late 2017.
