Costain and Swarco to install advanced digital road signs in UK

British construction and engineering firm Costain and Austrian traffic technology group Swarco collaborated to develop and install the next generation of digital road message signs in the UK.

Highways England also partnered with the two companies to develop the new road sign technology.

The signs are expected to improve road safety and travellers’ journey experiences by displaying clear messages and graphics during adverse weather conditions.


ADB sanctions $415m to upgrade North–South Corridor in Georgia

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided a $415m loan to Georgia for the North-South Corridor, as part of a wider government programme that aims to improve the country’s transport network.

The first in a series of upgrades planned for the North-South Corridor is the Kvesheti–Kobi Road Project.

Intersecting with the East-West Highway to the north of Tbilisi, the corridor, which is a vital route for Georgia, Armenia, and regional trading partners, also provides access to the shortest link connecting Central Asia with Europe and East Asia.


Porsche acquires stake in Israeli start-up TriEye

German car manufacturer Porsche acquired a minority stake in Israeli road visibility start-up TriEye.

TriEye will utilise the funds towards product development, operations and team growth.

The company established short-wave infrared sensing technology that enables visibility during dark and adverse weather conditions.


NCDOT selects Fluor JV for Interstate Expansion project in Asheville

The NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in the US awarded a $263m contract to engineering and construction firm Fluor’s joint venture (JV) with United Infrastructure to develop the Asheville Interstate Expansion project.

The project involves the widening and improvement of a 7.5-mile stretch of Interstate 26 from Exit 40 to the I-40 interchange in Asheville, North Carolina.

Contractors plan to widen the I-26 from two lanes to four lanes in each direction.


UPS tests self-driving tractor-trailers in Arizona, US

US-based supply chain management company United Parcel Service (UPS) revealed that it is testing self-driving tractor-trailers in Arizona.

The self-driving service commenced in May this year and follows a minority investment made by UPS venture capital arm in the autonomous driving company TuSimple.

As part of the ongoing testing, the goods are being transported on a North American Freight Forwarding route between Phoenix and Tucson.


HERE partners with Citi Logik to launch traffic management solution

Mapping and location data provider HERE Technologies partnered with UK-based mobility analytics company Citi Logik to help cities monitor, analyse and manage urban movement.

The duo agreed to integrate HERE’s Real-Time Traffic and Speed Data solutions with Citi Logik’s SaaS tool, CitiAnalytics.

CitiAnalytics is a web-based, real-time city analysis platform.


Optimus Ride launches self-driving vehicle programme in New York, US

Self-driving startup Optimus Ride launched a self-driving vehicle programme at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, US.

Brooklyn Navy Yard is a 300-acre industrial park with over 400 manufacturing businesses and more than 10,000 employees onsite.

A total of six autonomous vehicles are expected to carry around 550 passengers a day between the New York City Ferry stop at Dock 72 and the Yard’s Cumberland Gate at Flushing Avenue.


VINCI completes construction of Atlantic Bridge in Panama

French firm VINCI Construction completed the construction of the 4.6km Atlantic Bridge in the Colón province of Panama.

Located 3km from the Gatun and Agua Clara locks, it is one of three bridges currently placed over the Panama Canal and links the North American and South American continents.

The Atlantic Bridge will be used irrespective of whether the canal locks are in operation or not.


PennDOT to repair over ten state highways in the Philadelphia region

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in the US state of Pennsylvania, announced plans to repair and resurface several state highways across the Philadelphia region.

As part of the programme, PennDOT will undertake works on more than ten state highways within the area.

Over 200 miles of state highway in the counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia will be included in the scheme.


Georgia’s NFCID region approves CV technology to improve road safety

The North Fulton Community Improvement District (NFCID), in the US state of Georgia, approved the deployment of connected vehicle (CV) technology in a bid to improve road safety and queuing times at intersections.

The NFCID selected Applied Information, a US-based developer of connected, intelligent transportation systems, to deploy its advanced CV connection system across the North Fulton region.

As part of the project, Applied Information will install the technology in all 44 intersections within the North Fulton area.
