Swedish construction and development firm Skanska has secured a Skr615m ($70m) contract from Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Under the contract, Skanska will be responsible for designing and building a new interchange at State Road 557 of Interstate 4 (I-4) in Polk City, Florida, the US.

The project includes the construction of a new bridge that will be used to carry State Road 557 traffic over the newly widened I-4.

The bridge will have the capacity to accommodate future tolled express lanes, as well as a high-speed rail corridor.

Upon completion, the design and reconstruction work will transform an interchange from an existing partial cloverleaf interchange to a diamond interchange.

Skanska noted that the project will see a significant improvement in the road’s traffic patterns and enhance motorist safety.

In addition, the Swedish construction company will be building two new bridges on I-4, which will enable wildlife crossings between the natural areas to the north and south of the project.

Fencing provided along the I-4 limited access right-of-way line will help to channelise the movement of wildlife.

Construction will begin next month and the new bridge is expected to open in 2023. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in July 2023.

Last July, Skanska secured a $114m agreement to rehabilitate a highway in north-east US.

The company included the contract in US order bookings for the second quarter of 2019.

Under the contract, Skanska will replace and renovate sections of the highway. Completion of the project is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.
