The US State of Florida has unveiled a new tolling system, SunPass, for those who prefer to pay the toll in cash.

The new system, called Toll-by-Plate, is expected to remove the need to have toll plazas on all key highways.

Under the new system, the toll roads authorities will take a video snapshot of the users’ licence plates and send them the bill, which would include a service fee.

The new programme is scheduled to begin in two phases, with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority in 2010 and the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike in 2011.

Toll-by-Plate customers will be able to pre-pay their accounts in cash, check or credit and debit cards at various locations including convenience stores and supermarkets.
