Austria has opened its first public private partnership (PPP) motorway – a 51km road that includes several sections on the A5 motorway between Vienna and the Czech Republic.

While the first 16km section of the road opened in November last year, the remaining 35km section between Section S1 West and A5 South has opened recently.

The €933m ($1.3bn) design-build-finance-operate project has been carried out by concession company Bonaventura under contract with Asfinag (Austrian Autobahnen-und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft).

The motorway will be operated by a special purpose operating company Bonaventura Strassenerhaltungs for a period of 30 years.

Bonaventura includes a 11.2% stake by Egis Projects, and 44.4% stake each by German company Hochtief PPP Solutions and Austrian company Alpine Bau.

The three companies also hold the €50m ($70m) equipment supply and delivery contract for the project.
