Traffic on the Pacific Highway is set to double by 2020, according to Australia’s National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA).

The NRMA forecast also said the freight movement and truck numbers through Coffs Harbour would be double the current volume.

NRMA president Wendy Machin said Australia-wide crashes involving heavy vehicles are estimated to cost $2bn a year.

“More than 300 people are killed annually in crashes involving trucks, according to the Transport Industry Safety Group,” Machin said.
