The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi has installed 40 portable variable message signs (PVMS) as part of the first stage of the Emirate’s road safety campaign.

The PVMS will be deployed along the Abu Dhabi-Dubai and Abu Dhabi-Al Ain main roads and are expected to be used for the upcoming Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2010, according to gulfnews.com.

The wheeled hydraulic portable devices that display digital messages in both Arabic and English are expected to be visible from a distance of up to 300m.

The portable road signs are intended to provide drivers with warnings and up-to-date information on road and travel conditions and aid in reducing speeds and preventing crashes.

Abu Dhabi Department of Transport engineer Faisal Ahmad Al Suwaidi said PVMS are being used as a short-term solution until permanent VMS and intelligent transportation systems are installed, possibly within the next three years.
