Bangladesh has approved the final scheme design for the $2.4bn Padma Multipurpose Bridge project.

The 6.15km double-decker bridge is touted as having the world’s deepest foundation, according to The Daily Star.

Bangladeshi minister Syed Abul Hossain said the superstructural bridge can sustain a tremor measuring nine on the Richter scale.

The World Bank is expected to provide half of the project cost, the Asian Development Bank $615m, Japan International Cooperation Agency $350m and Islamic Development Bank $130m.
